REBECCA ELFAST

What captures me about watercolor is the emerging tug-of war between the pigments and the one holding the paintbrush. Direct it too much, and the watercolor dies, becomes stiff and dull. It still needs to be guided, just enough, to be at its best behavior. So that chance and accidents become beautiful, unique features in the painting, open for interpretation by the beholder. A perfect balance between chaos and order. My background in architecture is perhaps visible in my fascination with buildings, human traces, lines, repetition and pattern. But it is important to me that the human hand is always there, that the somewhat ugly, imperfect and organic contribute to a more interesting experience.
